2022 Spring Session: Toward better communication: A survey of useful approaches from linguistics

2022, Session Proposals

Session Title: Toward better communication: A survey of useful approaches from linguistics

Type of Session: Workshop

Presenter: Mackenzie Bristow

Description of Session:

Words matter. What sequence of words will resonate with my audience? What is a good conversation? What tools can I use to quickly understand linguistic interactions and large amounts of language data? This workshop will provide you a chance to explore two approaches using the tools from linguistics. First, you will have a chance to apply Hymes SPEAKING analysis to a typical product scenario to sharpen your qualitative linguistic analytical skills. Then, you will explore two free online corpus linguistic tools where you can crunch large amounts of language data or explore language trends. These flexible approaches from linguistics can be applied by Project managers trying to understand why their team does not work well together, to UXer analyzing customer sentiment, or those trying to crack an automated chat on a small budget.
